How To Maintain A Butterfly Valve
Following proper directions and instructions is and will always be a nice thing to do, even in installing a butterfly valve inside the house. No kidding. This valve is widely used in day-to-day life such as in the carburetor of a car. These valves are mainly used in controlling a certain object, in the case of a carburetor, and then the entrance of air in the car is being decreased or increased through the use of the valve. Simply put, this is used to regulate the flow which in this case, is the air. Due to this high end function, proper and constant maintenance of this valve is a must. This valve is operated similar to that of a ball valve.
Of course, such a high end device requires maintenance, and sometimes, needs to be replaced with a new one, especially the one being used in a car. These kinds of valves are usually favored by many due to their inexpensive nature, as well as being light in weight. As stated before, due to them being high-performance valves, there are problems that can be encountered, but these problems have solutions. Just like everything else. They are quite easy to repair though, which is a good thing.
Perhaps the most common that this valve gets is that it gets contaminated or eroded by the residue of whatever it is that it regulates. Think that’s the worst part? No. The worst part is that when this happens, the valve cannot control the flow and will experience difficulty in opening and closing. In this situation, the valve just lost its ability to resist high temperature, which would sadly render it useless. These quarter turn valves have different pressures served for different uses. By becoming eroded, the flow being sent through the valve will be drastically affected and therefore, the person will have troubles in operating the valve. The inability to remove the entire residue inside the butterfly valve is a big disadvantage to this design, but then again, it is cheap so it’s still kind of a nice thing. When this happens, the valve is usually replaced.
Due to its simple design and structure, maintenance is not that big of a task. This valve has a circular body which is mounted on a rotating disk with a rod that runs through its middle area (you can know more this at parts of a butterfly valve article). This creates an airtight seal and therefore, should be changed first. Commonly during maintenance, this rod and disk is replaced and upon replacement, the valve should work properly again. The rod goes out through a pipe, and then triggers a mechanism to move the rod. This rod, as well as the metal plate, should be held tightly while being fixed to avoid the occurrence of leaks. Doing so would prevent leakage in both the pipe and the valve itself. But of course, it has to be installed the proper way and that is the reason why following instructions are essential in installing these butterfly valves.
